Here is presented for the first time a complete history of one of the notable pioneer trails of America.
Envisioned and partially opened by the Spanish padres Escalante and Garcés in 1776, it was
completed by American fur trappers a half century later. For twenty years it was the scene of regular commerce —
pack trains of blankets carried to California each fall and bands of horses and mules driven back to
New Mexico each spring. Horse-thieves, slave catchers, and some homeseekers also braved
the desert stretches of this inhospitable trail.

In the autumn of 1849 several companies of goldseekers and some Mormon missionaries
trekked a “Southern Route” to California. The largest company was the Jefferson Hunt train
of over 100 wagons. Most of the goldseekers turned from the known Old Spanish Trail to take the so-called
“Walker Cutoff” to the California mines. Rugged terrain turned back most of these; the foolhardy ones who
persisted became the famous Death Valley Party.
