The Discovery of San Francisco Bay

The Portolá Expedition of 1769–1770

The Diary of Miguel Costansó
In Spanish and English   En español e inglés

In July 1769 the first Spanish land expedition to explore in what is now California set out from San Diego to march to Monterey Bay—there to establish a mission and presidio. But they didn't recognize the bay as they stood on its shore, and kept on to the north—thinking that it still lay ahead. In early November they discovered San Francisco Bay, after a journey of nearly four months from San Diego. They were the first Europeans to see it.
