Enchanted Childhoods Introduction Introduction Several years ago, when I first envisioned this book, I saw it as an anthology of narratives by people who had grown up in Yosemite, and who later in life had recorded the perspectives and perceptions gained from living in that spectacular place. For starters, I could quote from hotelkeeper's daughter Marjorie Cook Wilson, whose unpublished autobiography was in the Yosemite Research Library, and from autobiographical articles by Laurence V. Degnan that had been published in a Yosemite journal. Jay C. Bruce's book Cougar Killer contained several pages about his childhood in Wawona, and Mary Curry Tresidder had penned some reminiscences of her younger years at Camp Curry. And, I thought, there would be others. But there weren't others—only fragmentary memoirs existed, and they were unorganized, scattered, sometimes almost indecipherable. Taped recordings weren't much more helpful, since the topics were rarely related to childhood. Although an anthology didn't seem to be feasible, and my notes had burned, I determined to put together what I could, solicit the “oldtimers” of this century, and organize the material into chapters. After I had begun, I discovered that a reunion of people who had attended Yosemite Elementary School was being planned. Even though my enrollment there in 1941 had been short, I qualified as an alumna, and I quickly became involved with the plans. That led me to request reminiscences and insights from more than fifty alumni on their youthful experiences in Yosemite. It is their responses that so enliven the final chapters, on what we all agreed were enchanted childhoods. Acknowledgments to those many generous individuals who aided me would resemble a telephone directory, beginning with A for Adams (Anne, Michael, and Virginia), and ending with Z for Zaepffel. Indeed, I am indebted to almost every person, dead and alive, named in the index at the end of this book, and believe me, their help was and is appreciated. Some people deserve special acknowledgment because I called on them so often. Both Linda Eade and Jim Snyder, respectively the librarian and the curator for the Park Service's Yosemite Research Library, provided me with written material, photographs, maps, and encouragement throughout my work.
