Protecting Paradise
Yosemite Rangers, 1898–1960

by Shirley Sargent

Yosemite National Park was created in 1890, and was initially patrolled by the U.S. Cavalry.

The first civilian rangers were appointed in 1898. They learned to cope with the wildlife, autos, patrols, searches and rescues, law violators, and natural disasters.

This is the story of their lives: what they did and how they did it, often told in their own words in logbooks, diaries, and personal recollections.

Without rangers to patrol and protect Yosemite, it would have been overgrazed by sheep and cattle, overrun with hunters, prospectors, miners, Christmas-tree cutters, and loggers, and overdeveloped by commercial interests exploiting the natural world for their private gain.
