Foreword

Who has written more about Yosemite than Shirley Sargent? Her contributions range far and wide: fiction loosely based on her own enchanted childhood in Yosemite; stories of people—Muir, Hutchings, Clark, Solomons, Lukens; the “pioneers in petticoats” and famous guests; the history of concessioners; histories of Yosemite locales such as Wawona and Foresta; histories of buildings such as Camp Curry, the High Sierra Camps, and the Ahwahnee Hotel. The more widely she has written, the more widely she has come to be known and loved. Shirley's books have introduced many people to Yosemite's past. Her enthusiasm for her subject is contagious.

In this, her latest book, Shirley turns her mind to a new subjectþthe history of rangers in Yosemite. Her good friend Horace Albright had much earlier written a humorous book, Oh, Ranger! Later, retired ranger John Bingaman wrote Guardians of the Yosemite, A Story of the First Rangers, which is part reminiscence, part autobiography, and part history. In the decades since Bingaman's book was published, its value has grown as a record of activity about which little has been written. The absence of other such books has made clear the need for revision and expansion of what Bingaman so ably began.

There are few diaries regarding Yosemite lives and activities. Shirley has worked hard to get around this problem by dredging up the written records of past rangers, and has encouraged retired rangers or their families to write or record their stories. She has delved into ranger family scrapbooks and photograph albums to piece together a cohesive story, always grounded in their personal experiences. And thus Shirley has become the collector, compiler, editor, and historian of the lives of Yosemite rangers over a period of more than sixty years.

What made rangers distinctive was their work in the field, with people and with the land. Rangers were people in uniformþauthority figuresþto whom others could turn for information and assistance. Many rangers were seasonal, often teachers working in the park during the summer months. Seasonals as well as permanent rangers had long associations with Yosemite, and carried on its traditions. Married field rangers very often worked with their wives as a team—a two-for-the-price-of-one arrangement that Shirley is the first to acknowledge and document.

Changes in the ranger force in recent years have mirrored changes in the agency at large. The beginnings of these changes are also part of Shirley's story. With this book she has certainly become an honorary ranger and an important factor in sustaining the traditions yet noting the changes in the role of National Park Service rangers in Yosemite.
